OUR ISSUES

In Custody Deaths

More detention center deaths than any other administration. Part of the reason for these record deaths is directly attributable to McFadden’s lack of institutional knowledge of detention operations, his erosion of professional standards, and degradation of detention officers in front of people in custody. This inexcusable behavior by a Sheriff emboldens persons in custody to attack officers and others in custody. It has made the Mecklenburg Detention Center environment unsafe and even more challenging to work in.

Lost Revenue

Mecklenburg County has lost over $xx million dollars in federal revenue from the housing of persons in federal custody due to the inability of the incumbent to reasonably negotiate fees for beds pace with the U.S. Marshals Service.

Fair and Equitable Promotion

Implementation of a fair and equitable promotional process for MCSO employees that seek to identify the most qualified candidates for promotion. Sheriff McFadden promotes employees who have failed the written examination portion of the promotional process. A written exam that consists of policies, procedures, state laws, and general orders, commonly utilized by supervisors to make informed and lawful decisions.

Core Values

We need a Sheriff’s Office that is strengthened through staff development, professionalism, retention, fair and respectful treatment of all employees and those under our care and supervision, employee wellness, the safety and security of persons in custody and detention officers, and meaningful community interaction.

Healthy Work Environment

A deep commitment to establishing a healthy working place culture, opposite to the toxic and dysfunctional environment established by the incumbent that sets a poor example by avoiding responsibility and perpetuating a culture of blame. Instead, a healthy work environment where leadership owns their actions and encourages others to accept responsibility for their actions; an environment that focuses on excellence and providing a consistent and high level of service to the citizens of Mecklenburg County.

Rehabilitation Programs

The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office has a long history of rehabilitation programs in the Mecklenburg County Detention Center dating back decades. These programs are available to persons in custody and provide opportunities to develop skills and address issues that may have caused them to come into conflict with the law. I fully support transformative detention programs that make for a safer detention environment and help persons in our custody develop skills and knowledge to contribute to society after release.
